2019 Thanksgiving Travel Update

New York Penn Station | Amtrak.com

Now is the time to plan your trip and book your tickets if you are planning to travel by train over the Thanksgiving travel period.

The cost to travel on Amtrak during this period will be much higher than normal and many trains will sell out — in fact some Amtrak trains in our region are already sold out around the holiday (see the list below).

For people traveling between

Greenfield, Northampton or Holyoke

and

New Haven, Stamford, or New York City,
and all intermediate Metro-North stations

We recommend that you consider taking the Valley Flyer to New Haven and connecting to Metro-North’s New Haven Line service instead of Amtrak. Doing this will save you a fair amount of money and it won’t add much time to your trip.

Schedule options for the connection to/from Metro-North in New Haven are shown in the sheet (2 pages) below.

Valley Flyer / Vermonter Schedule Overview (PDF)
Prepared by Trains In The Valley | As of November 11, 2019

To travel from Northampton to New York City, as example, you’ll need to purchase a ticket from Amtrak for travel on the Valley Flyer from Northampton to New Haven Union Station AND a ticket from Metro-North for travel from New Haven to Grand Central Terminal.

Fare and ticketing information for the Valley Flyer connection to Metro-North can be found on our Valley Flyer page.

Please keep in mind that Metro-North’s trains run to Grand Central Terminal and not to New York Penn Station.

Tips and tricks

  • Allow extra time. The roads, platforms and trains will be busy during the holiday travel period.
  • The maximum Valley Flyer fare during peak travel times between Northampton and New Haven is $50. (yes, really) There’s a trick that you can use to avoid this price — purchase a Amtrak Valley Flyer ticket from Northampton to Springfield ($14 should be the maximum price) and then a 2nd Amtrak-issued ticket on the same train from Springfield to New Haven. (for $12.75). The total cost for both tickets will be just $26.75. Please note that this workaround doesn’t work if you are planning to take the Vermonter to New Haven.
  • Consider using the Hartford Line to connect to/from Metro-North in New Haven if you can’t purchase a ticket on the Valley Flyer or the Vermonter. The upside to taking the Hartford Line is that the fares are reasonable and fixed. The downside is that you will have to get yourself to/from either Springfield Union Station or Windsor Locks CT station.
  • If you are traveling on an Amtrak Hartford Line train during the holiday period be sure to purchase your ticket from Amtrak and not from a CTrail ticket machine. With an Amtrak ticket in hand you are sure to get a seat on the train.
