At long last, a new train station in Brattleboro!
The new station, which has been under discussion for decades, will officially open to the public this Wednesday, June 24.
The station, located at 21 Depot Street1, will feature an indoor climate-controlled waiting area and accessible bathrooms. It will also include a 345-foot-long high-level boarding platform, with portions of the platform covered.
The Brattleboro station project is part of Amtrak’s ADA Stations Program, a federal initiative that upgrades passenger rail stations to meet accessibility standards and improve travel for all passengers, including people with disabilities.
In addition to the ceremony, guests can enjoy food from 802 Soul Kitchen, family-friendly activities, and an opportunity to explore the new station.
The opening of this station marks an important investment in passenger rail infrastructure serving southeastern Vermont and southwestern New Hampshire, while improving accessibility and convenience for rail passengers.
Community members, rail supporters, and local residents are encouraged to attend and help celebrate this important milestone for Brattleboro and the region.
Schedule for the Day (June 24)
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. — The official celebration
Grand opening celebration featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony with local and state officials, representatives from Amtrak, and project partners.
Attendees will also be among the first to see the unveiling of a new Brattleboro Words Trail exhibit created by local artist Cynthia Houghton.
12:59 p.m. — Arrival of the first train
The scheduled arrival of the first Amtrak train (Train 55, the southbound Vermonter en route to Washington, DC).
If you plan to be on the new platform when the first train arrives, you must be on the station side of the tracks before the train arrives. The last coach will likely block the crossing while the train is in the station.
We kindly remind all guests that both tracks at this station are active. To cross, you must use the designated railroad crossing on Bridge Street.
2 p.m. — Museum of Things Tiny & Found
The celebration continues downtown at the Museum of Things Tiny & Found (139 Main Street), where visitors can enjoy a model train display and a miniature ribbon-cutting ceremony.
2:30 p.m. — Train-themed movie at Latchis Theater
The Latchis Theater (50 Main Street) will show the train-themed film Hugo. Suggested donation is $5.
3:30 p.m. — Rail Advocates Gathering
Senator Wendy Harrison will host a gathering of rail advocates from Vermont (Carl Fowler), Massachusetts (Ben Heckscher, Trains In The Valley), and New Hampshire (Sharon Wood).
This event will be held at 28 Vernon Street, in the office building just south of the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center on Vernon Street. Please note that this is a new location for this event.
The meeting will be in a first-floor room facing the new station. All are welcome as we discuss ways to improve and expand rail travel in the region.
6 p.m. — From Revolution to Reflection: Live on the Brattleboro Words Trail
Actors led by the Tiny Theater will perform From Revolution to Reflection: Live on the Brattleboro Words Trail, an America 250-inspired outdoor performance near the new train station (rain location: Brooks Memorial Library). More information is available at brattleborowords.org.
