MassDOT Rail and Transit Division

This division is responsible for overseeing the Commonwealth’s 15 Regional Transit Authorities, maintaining state-owned rail tracks, and managing freight and passenger rail programs to improve mobility across Massachusetts.

The division serves as the state sponsor for all state-supported Amtrak routes in western Massachusetts. except Lake Shore Limited service, which is a federally sponsored long-distance service.

Rail Transit Safety Division
Department of Public Utilities (DPU)

The DPU’s Rail Transit Safety Division is responsible for overseeing the safety of equipment and operations of the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA).

The Division is also the state agency with exclusive regulatory authority over all public rail crossings in Massachusetts.
